Sure it’s a fad. Fixie bikes are too. Spandex sport climbing, snow skates, rollerblading, all fads. But, if it gets one person off their butt and inspired to get fit, or a bunch of people out of the gym and into the world, it was all worth it, wasn’t it?

Ever since homo sapiens stood up we have been running barefoot. Most places most people in the world run barefoot. Evolutionarily speaking, running with fancy shoes is a fad.

Our feet have been conditioned at an early age to walk/run w/shoes. Our body and especially points of impact need to be retrained in order to run barefoot without injury. It’s a fad because most people don’t have the time or inclination to go through the retraining process. Plus the barefoot “shoes” look goofy.

Nah, it’s not a fad because shoes will come and go but people will always have bare feet!

Is Yoga a fad? Mixed Martial Arts? well they have moments of being trendy but they are thousands of years old. Barefoot running/walking, living is even older. Commercialism always has a tendency to saturate our brains until we burn out. branding aside it is and always was here to stay even if just for a select bunch.
    great topic!
