Whitewater parks are another way to make the outdoors more accessible to the public, which in general promote healthy activity, bring awareness of preservation issues, and generate business for the hosting community. They also promote local recreation over fossil-fuel consuming driving to high mountain destinations for kayakers. They can be a revenue generating operation for the city that builds it, and perhaps even displace illegal activity taking place along a river. Bringing a focus back to a river long taken for granted in a community can bring about awareness of water and pollution issues as well.
