I’m Roadshow Steve. I travel with the Adventure Sports Journal booth to events all around the state of California. I also help out with distribution. I’m a nomad, often on the road for days at a time. Sometimes it is difficult to adhere to a healthy diet. I lean heavily upon Isula Nature brand maca tablets.

Maca (Lepidium meyenii) tablets are condensed from the root of an herbaceous plant that is native to high elevations in Peru. Maca is packed full of amino acids, which are the building blocks of protein. It is rich in calcium and potassium. It contains carbohydrates, iron, manganese, copper, zinc and an alphabet of vitamins. In terms of health benefits, it contains molecules that the world is only just learning about. I think of it more as a food than a supplement. Maca has become an element of my daily breakfast and lunch. I take two tablets, twice per day.

I travelled with the Adventure Sports Journal Roadshow on each weekend during November. On successive weekends, I was at the Snowbomb winter sports festivals in San Francisco, San Jose, and Sacramento. After that, I returned to San Francisco for the SF Bike Expo. The food available at these events tends to be unhealthy. In San Jose, I was faced with a choice between hot dogs or nachos. Fortunately, I had my maca with me.

In September, I did something strange. I walked over 400 miles on a meandering route from Santa Cruz County to Humboldt County. I walked the open space preserves along Skyline Ridge. I marched through the city, and across the Golden Gate Bridge. I passed through the Marin Headlands, Muir Woods and Mt. Tamalpais State Park. I walked the Bolinas Ridge trail to Samuel Taylor State Park, and then I spent nearly a week on foot along Highway 1. I backpacked the Lost Coast Trail from Rockport to Petrolia, and finished my adventure on Wildcat Road to Ferndale, continuing on to Eureka. Once again, I leaned heavily upon maca. It was a great blessing to be able to pack so much energy and nutrition into such a small package. I would predict that maca will become standard in the kit and kaboodle of endurance athletes.

Here was my gear in September, with my bottle of maca in the foreground…hikingkit

So, I tell people about maca. It’s part of my story. As a nutritious food and an adaptogen, it mitigates times of stress and substandard diet. It powered me through last summer, and I will carry it with me into the year 2015.
