Cycling Festival Weekend with World Champion Cyclist Peter Sagan to Include “Gravel” Course, Live Music, Local Food, Beer and More

Truckee, California has been selected as the “gravel” host location for one of two Sagan Gran Fondo cycling events in California this year and in 2019. The Truckee Tourism Business Improvement District (TTBID) has reached a mutual understanding with the event producers at Bike Monkey, in partnership with three-time world champion cyclist Peter Sagan, to bring this year’s event to Truckee May 3-5, 2018. Bike Monkey is the producer of the famous Levi’s GranFondo out of Santa Rosa, California.

Featuring a long-course distance of 67.5 miles, the combo of trail/pavement is ideally suited for wide clearance cyclocross or gravel bikes and will take place on gravel and dirt roads through alpine mountain scenery. A shorter, 23-mile course route will also be offered. Participants should expect traffic-controlled intersections, on-bike marshals, moto officials, food stations and SAG providing rider support. Spaces will be limited to the first 1,500 registrants, with competitive categories and awards for the top three riders in 12 total age and gender groups. Rider registration will begin February 15 at 10:00 a.m. PST online at saganfondo.com, and is expected to sell out.

The event weekend will include a fundraising gala on Thursday, May 3, a VIP pre-ride and lunch with Peter Sagan on Friday, March 4, and the race and festival, including vendors, beer, local food, live music and other ancillary events and activities, on Saturday, May 5.

“All of the festivities are as much of a party for riders as they are for family and friends who join them, and for Truckee-Tahoe locals who may wish to race, volunteer or just enjoy closeup sightings of world class pro cyclists,” said Colleen Dalton, brand communications director for the Truckee Tourism Business Improvement District (TTBID).

“Truckee is a year-round destination with world-class trails and a community that embraces cycling, and the fact that this event precedes this year’s Tour de California means there could be surprise appearances of pro cyclists here to participate. We expect national and international participants to fill the 1,500 openings quickly,” Dalton continued. “Partnering with Bike Monkey and Peter Sagan on this event is a great fit for the culture of our town, and we’re ready to roll out the red carpet for all of the riders in the Sagan Fondo.”

Sagan will participate in activities taking place on the days before and after the event, raising awareness and support for the King Ridge Foundation, the Specialized Foundation, and select local non-profits serving at-risk youth. Bike Monkey is currently seeking alignment with local non-profit organizations.

On-course volunteer event staff are invited to join the Bike Monkey crew and will receive a complimentary event T-shirt and food on event day. To volunteer, contact info@bikemonkey.net.
