Five Great Winter Hikes in Big Sur

Most people have put away their hiking boots by this time of year and will forget about them until fair weather returns. But for those willing to put slick sole to muddy trail year-round, the area around the Ventana Wilderness in Big Sur offers spectacular winter hiking. Free from the fog apron and camera-toting hordes that descend every summer, the famous coastline in the winter offers 400 miles of trail, boundless solitude and equally unimpeded views.

Are you ready for an adventure race?

Adventure races are also such a HUGE undertaking that someone entering one might think, “Am I ready? Did I train enough? Did I forget something?” I remember one race in particular, my very first Eco Challenge and only my second race ever. It was probably the most unprepared and frightened I have felt in my whole life. A 24-hour race seemed like an eternity to me. My background was cross country running in high school and college where the two and three mile races seemed long. Most of my fear was due to lack of experience and knowledge. I really had no idea what I was getting in to. I had done one 24 hour race that happened to be an Eco Challenge qualifier. I was like a deer caught in the headlights the whole way. We won the race, nonetheless, and were invited to Australia.

Less than two hours from San Francisco, Sonoma County’s riding is world-class. Routes range from rocky dirt roads and #singletrack to deserted stretches of swooping asphalt that feature soaring sea views, misty stands of #redwoods and miles with barely a car in sight. Names like King Ridge and Fort Ross appear regularly on lists of the world’s best cycling routes, not to mention the incredible off-road riding that hides inland or the gorgeous stretch of coastal Highway 1 that runs from #Gualala to Bodega Bay.
