Surf City Cyclocross returns in 2021 at an exciting new location in the mountains above Santa Cruz! To make up for last year, we’ll be hosting a two-day event with racing on Saturday and Sunday. Racers who participate both days will compete to win the coveted Rock Lobster Cup trophy, and winners will receive a custom jersey from Voler Apparel.

Surf City CX Camping!

Car camping will be available for a limited number of participants on Saturday night. Make sure to include a camping pass when you pre-register for the race on our BikeReg page. Plan to stay and join the party! More information to follow.

Bay Area Super Prestige Series

BASP has returned in 2021 as a five race series in NorCal over four race weekends between September and December. Surf City is the second event in the series and both races, CX1 and CX2, contribute to the overall standing. Check out the BASP page for details.

The Course

Crest Ranch is perched in the forest on top of Bonny Doon Mountain, just 20 minute drive from Santa Cruz. The race course will feature smooth (yes!) fast sections, singletrack descents, run-ups and other fun features.

Free Entry for First Timers!

If this is your very first cyclocross race, we’re inviting you to join the fun for FREE! You read that correctly: your race is free if you’ve never raced cyclocross before. First-timers can sign up by sending us a message via the contact form with name, birthday and contact info, or by just showing up on race day.

Kids Race for Free!

In keeping with another tradition, kiddos get to race on a shortened lap around the expo in front of their adoring fans. Parents are invited to ride the lap with their kids if they’d like. You can just show-up at the start line to join the fun! Surf City CX

Volunteer

Surf City is a community event and we can’t do this without your help! There are a lot of volunteer opportunities available. Please consider lending a hand, you can reach out via the contact form.

Mark your calendars for this not-to-be-missed event … and figure out a costume for the costume race! Surf City CX

  • HELMETS REQUIRED

Surf City CX Bike Type

Ride what you brought. Most of the Surf City CX courses favor a cross bike, but to minimize barriers of entry to the sport, mountain bikes are allowed, particularly in the beginner categories.

Category Info

Racers are self-categorized based on age and gender, and categories divide riders into fitness and ability levels.

Cat C

Typically beginners to the sport. You’re either completely new to the sport or have ridden a cross bike on training rides, but haven’t competed yet. USAC cat 4/5 equivalent.

Cat B

Intermediate to advanced racers in both skillset and fitness. Also considered the “Working Person’s” category because the reality of life gets in the away of being competitive at the A level. USAC cat 3 equivalent.

Cat A

The fittest, most experienced riders race this category.USAC cat 1/2 equivalent.

Kids

Aged 9 and under, kids usually race a subset of the main race loop, and may do multiple laps depending on course layout. Everything from push bikes to miniature cross bikes with 24″ sewups are seen in the kids race, and prizes of fun bags with Clif Kids bars and the occasional medal (no cash or start money, sorry) are awarded to all.

Race Up

Riders can race “up” in category, ie, Masters can race in groups younger than their own, and Juniors can ride with older age groups. Anyone can race in the equivalent Open A, B, and C groups. Surf City CX

Sandbagging

A contentious issue; beginnners to the sport don’t know how they’ll stack up against the competition, but it’s expected that the series winners in the C and B categories upgrade next season. However, if you’re able to win your first race with enough of a gap to hang out on the sidelines and watch the battle for second (or similar feat), congratulations! It’s time to move up a notch.
