Ta-hoe Nalu 2015

Ta-hoe Nalu 2015

Ma-halo. After a stiff wind blew during Friday’s set-up, followed by an evening beach concert of energetic funk rock, conditions died down and the lake was placid by dawn on Saturday. Hawaiian dancers and drummers commenced the Aloha Spirit of the Ta-hoe Nalu. That joyful mana carried throughout the weekend. Though the event is competitive, it is also a celebration of the fortune we all share in one of California’s most exquisite natural settings. “Fun, Friends, Family and the Aloha Spirit” is the slogan on the poster. This year I was reminded again of the Nalu’s strong family character. The young and the old, and people of all skill levels can enjoy stand-up paddle boarding. It’s a very accessible sport, and that makes it a perfect group activity. It’s families that support and operate the local clubs around the lake. This year the announcer half-jokingly played up the...
Downieville Classic 2015

Downieville Classic 2015

July 30 thru August 2, 2015 Confluence of the North Yuba and Downie Rivers The little Gold Rush settlement was overtaken again by crazy MTBers. For a great background on the history of the event and the place, read Rick Gunn’s ASJ article: Downieville. Occasionally, someone asks me to name my favorite roadshow event. I can’t really say, but the Downieville Classic pops into my head. But then I start to think about the Wildflower Tri, Sea Otter, the Nalu, Biketoberfest, etc., and I just start waivering on the question. There’s no easy answer. Giant Bicycles team rider Carl Decker had been the champion 5 years running. This year, Decker won Saturday’s cross country, but flatted on Sunday’s downhill. It was Jason Moeschler’s year, the local Nevada City rider sponsored by WTB. Moeschler was back on top of the podium, awarded the 2015 All Mountain championship for the 4th...
USA Cycling Mountain Bike National Championships

USA Cycling Mountain Bike National Championships

July 15-19, 2015 Mammoth Mountain Mammoth Mountain Bike Park [sarcasm] Alas, poor Roadshow Steve was sent to Mammoth Lakes to visit one of California’s premier outdoor playgrounds [/sarcasm] . MTB’s National Championships had returned to the Golden State by way of Pennsylvania (2014). For the ASJ Roadshow it was an opportunity to interact with a great many people from SoCal, but also to meet people from across the country. Our booth was set up near the start/finish line in front of Canyon Lodge. Gondolas carried riders and spectators up from the Village through the treetops, dropping them off at the event. The free trolley bus stopped in front of our booth dinging its bell. I chatted with riders and visitors about the mag and upcoming events on the schedule and products on display from the partners of Adventure Sports Journal. It’s a long drive from Santa Cruz to Mammy, but...
The Sagebrush Sea

The Sagebrush Sea

“Something hidden. Go and find it. Go and look beyond the ranges– something lost behind the ranges. Lost and waiting for you…” -Rudyard Kipling The was a PBS Nature show a while back called The Sagebrush Sea. It grabbed my interest, knowing I had summer plans to make a few trips out to the eastern slopes of the Sierra. I learned about the natural history the grouse, bear, deer, coyote, golden eagles, reptiles and rodents which make their home in a land of fragrant lime-green sage and sparse grassland from eastern California to Wyoming. I had a few days between the end of the Death Ride and my next roadshow setup with which to experience this habitat. The previous week’s rains had greened the grasses and speckled the hills with wildflowers. I took Monitor Pass toward the 395 and stopped on Leviathan Peak Road to look back; After...
Death Ride 2015

Death Ride 2015

The California Alps July 11th, 2015 The word on the Lake was that it had been raining and hailing and thundering and lightening throughout the beginning of month. The weather had put a damper on the July 4th festivities in Tahoe. My destination was Turtle Rock Park just outside of Markleeville. My responsibility was to set up the ASJ Roadshow for the 2015 Death Ride. In addition to the threatening weather, there had been a recently extinguished wildfire south of town. As I drove up Highway 4 through the burned area and along a silty Carson River I wondered what to expect as far as turnout. But when I got the the Death Ride I recognized many fellow vendors and the expo was actually larger than memory served. A line of roadies snaked from the registration windows past our booth all the way around the corner. I passed out copies...
ASJ Roadshow: Sea Otter Classic 2015

ASJ Roadshow: Sea Otter Classic 2015

Building relationships at the world’s largest cycling expo Busy booth throughout the Otter! Roadshow Steve here. The ASJ Roadshow normally picks up momentum in April. This year was no different. The focus of this month was on cycling, starting with the Santa Cruz Mountain Bike Festival April 11-12 and culminating with the 25th annual Sea Otter Classic – the largest consumer bike exposition in North America – April 16-19. One thing I enjoy about the Sea Otter Classic is the international aspect of it. Rafael from Peru, founder of Isula Nature, spent time in our booth in conversation about food and medicine from the Amazon, and of course shared his lifelong interest in bikes. I met quite a few Brits, Scots and Irishmen. Cycling is such a huge component of Dutch culture, and my own Dutch heritage sparks my curiosity when in conversation with people from Holland. Of course,...

Roadshow: Volunteer Trail Work Day for popular Bay Area mountain biking flow trail

Camaraderie and trail work in the redwood forest Adventure Sports Journal was proud to sponsor December 20’s Mountain Bikers of Santa Cruz Volunteer Trail Work Day on their flow trail project at Soquel Demonstration State Forest (SDSF). 25 volunteers pitched in to work on drainage and other maintenance on the existing flow trail segments and other SDSF trails. We supported the trail crew by providing a delicious lunch, post-workday snacks, and an array of volunteer raffle goodies including an Eagles Nest Outfitters (ENO) hammock, Platypus Gravity Works pump-free water filtration system, Ninkasi Sleigh’r six packs, ASJ/Deschutes trucker hats and Osprey koozies. We appreciate the day’s hardworking crew and other generous supporters, and hope to help out with the flow trail project more in the future. A partnership between MBoSC and the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection (CAL FIRE), the flow trail project’s objectives are to promote mountain...
ROAD SHOW: Snowbomb Sacramento 2014

ROAD SHOW: Snowbomb Sacramento 2014

The ASJ Roadshow travelled to Sacramento last weekend (Nov 15-16) for the final installment of 3 consecutive Snowbomb Festivals. It was great to chat with Sacramento about our magazine and about the companies who partner with us. A special thanks is in order to all the Snowbomb crew for being great hosts and being very helpful at each event. Our booth was by the front door next to the half pipe: BMX Pros ASJ Booth The crowd thickened up during the afternoons. People gathered in the biergarten across from our booth to enjoy samples of local wines and beers. It was a great run of 3 Snowbomb Festivals on 3 consecutive weekends. Coming soon we’ll be at the SF Bike Expo, November 22nd. Come on out and pick up some bike gear. I’m going to grab some used handlebars for my classic Univega Safari 10 road bike. Stop by the...
ROAD SHOW: Snowbomb San Jose 2014

ROAD SHOW: Snowbomb San Jose 2014

The ASJ Roadshow traveled to San Jose on November 7-9 for the second of three Snowbomb Festivals. Despite the beautiful 75 degree weather, many people came into the convention center looking for a fun time and good deals on ski and snowboard passes and equipment. Last winter’s issues of ASJ were on the table next to a stand holding our current issue. In fact, some people grabbed 7 or 8 different issues of ASJ from our booth for one low price of… FREE!  The stories in our past issues are still completely relevant, as are the ads. Raffle sign-up A climbing wall rose from the convention floor to the ceiling. In Yoda’s Riglet pen, instructors gave snowboarding lessons to little kids. For the adults, as with every Snowbomb Festival, beer and wine tastings were available. People left happy, carrying boards under their arms and lift tickets in their pockets. By...

ROADSHOW: Snowbomb Festival SF, 2014

ASJ’s Roadshow Steve reports on our engaging and popular booth presence at this popular winter sports festival and expo November 1st and 2nd the ASJ Roadshow travelled to Fort Mason in San Francisco, where something is always happening. We set up our booth at the Snowbomb Festival and winter sports expo. Outside the venue, there was a farmers market and a half-marathon and a beautiful view out to Alcatraz and beyond. At Snowbomb, festival goers enjoyed wine tasting on Saturday and beer tasting on Sunday. We were there representing Deschutes Brewery, selling Earn Your Beer tee shirts and sharing samples of Mirror Pond Pale Ale and Chainbreaker White IPA. Matt and I were fired up on Isula Nature brand Peruvian maca. People tried on Deuter packs and checked out the ENO hammocks we had on display. And, we had fun with the crowd and our lovely neighbors in the surrounding...
