Step by Step Around Big Blue

The Tahoe Rim Trail: It’s 165 miles of primo single-track circling Lake Tahoe via two mountain ranges, three wilderness areas and two states. Mile after mile of jaw dropping vistas of Lake Tahoe, quiet strolls through deep forest, and glacier carved lakes at the base of high granite peaks. In July, you’ll find spectacular wildflower gardens at Meiss Meadows; August is time for a refreshing swim in Dick’s Lake; and in the fall, yellow aspen leaves light up Snow Valley.

Shasta Climbing Season Extended

Wet spring helped preserve snow for summer climbing and skiing Don’t put away those skis and crampons yet! Weeks of cool temps and steady moisture through June have kept Mt. Shasta’s snowy flanks in prime shape leaving the window open for stellar late season climbing and skiing well into July and perhaps beyond.

Rubber Room: Born Again Rock Stars

Years ago, when I was a young, naive lad, I brought a pair old Boreal rock shoes to be resoled at the Rubber Room in Bishop. The resoling shop’s logo—a cartoonish scantily clad, rubber-wearing dominatrix found in climbing magazines—shared a certain salacious fervor more likely to be found in the back of a big-city weekly where the term “massage” is thrown around rather loosely. So with this image planted firmly in mind with the spike of a six-inch heel, I hesitated at the door half expecting to be whipped and spanked. And I would have deserved it given the sorry state of my worn shoes.

Despite California’s empty wallet, the Golden State is not hurting for amazing outdoor recreation opportunities. From the redwoods to the Sierra and back to the Bay there is an adventure lurking along every highway. Surrounded by all these beaches, trails, rivers, and crags, the diversity of natural amenities makes it easy to do it all, if even in a single sunny day. Care to kayak then pedal singletrack? Or how about a road ride and then some bouldering? … Double-up days like these are no problem in the rich and diverse landscapes of our greater Nor Cal/Nevada region.

Ty Fairbairn pulls up into a Donner Summit sunset. Sometimes all it takes for progression is good vision. In the summer of 2006, Truckee rock climbers Ty Fairbairn, Dustin Sabo, Brian Sweeney and Scott Thelen opened their eyes to the obvious while driving along Interstate 80 and discovered one of the best new Tahoe rock climbing developments in recent years – the Castle Peak boulders.

All State Parks in Big Sur Area Closed Due to Highway 1 Road Slip Out 🛑⁠

Due to the road slip out on Highway 1 at Rocky Creek in Monterey County, all State Parks in the Big Sur Area are now closed to day use and camping. ⛺️ That includes Pfeiffer Big Sur State Park, Andrew Molera State Park, Limekiln State Park, Julia Pfeiffer Burns State Park and Point Sur State Historic Park. ⁠
⁠
State Parks will continue to work closely with Caltrans and CHP to assess impacts to the highway and will update closures as road conditions allow. 🚧All camping reservations will be cancelled, and refunds will be processed. ⁠

An exact timeline on when these parks will reopen depends on road repairs. For more on those repairs, please contact Caltrans. 🚥⁠
