Are you ready for an adventure race?

Adventure races are also such a HUGE undertaking that someone entering one might think, β€œAm I ready? Did I train enough? Did I forget something?” I remember one race in particular, my very first Eco Challenge and only my second race ever. It was probably the most unprepared and frightened I have felt in my whole life. A 24-hour race seemed like an eternity to me. My background was cross country running in high school and college where the two and three mile races seemed long. Most of my fear was due to lack of experience and knowledge. I really had no idea what I was getting in to. I had done one 24 hour race that happened to be an Eco Challenge qualifier. I was like a deer caught in the headlights the whole way. We won the race, nonetheless, and were invited to Australia.

Our latest issue has the first of five stories in a series by Matt Johanson who has been sectioning the PCT for the past twenty plus years.

Matt recently took a one-year leave from teaching at Castro Valley High School to complete the remaining 2,250 miles.

Lucky for Matt, his wife Karen has encouraged him to live his dream and has been providing support along the way.

In case you missed it, Yosemite announced yesterday that Big Oak Flat Road (continuation of Highway 120 west into Yosemite) is closed from just inside the park boundary to Merced Grove.

"The road has a crack that is about 200 feet long and up to four feet deep. The road surface has moved two to three inches vertically and horizontally and is continuing to move.

The embankment below the road has moved as much as 15 feet downslope and has significant water flow through it."

The road will be closed at least until mid-June and possibly into July.
