Due to concerns related to COVID-19 SBTS pulls the plug on the Downieville Classic

Earlier today the Sierra Buttes Trail Stewardship (SBTS) announced the cancellation of California’s most iconic mountain bike race, the Downieville Classic. “This was not an easy decision to make, but necessary for the safety of the racers, volunteers, staff and community,” announced the Stewardship via their online newsletter. This event is one of ASJ’s long time favorite events and though it is clearly the right thing to do, we understand what a difficult decision this must have been.

The newsletter made clear that the health and safety of the Downieville community was central to making the call for cancellation. “Currently there are no known cases of Covid-19 in Sierra County and it is important it stays that way as it is a vulnerable ย community with limited medical facilities and an aging population.ย In addition to the cancellation of the event, Yuba Expeditions in downtown Downieville will remain closed until further notice.”

After announcing that the event won’t be taking place, the newsletter went on to emphasize that now is not a good time to visit the Lost Sierra for a mountain bike trip. “At this time we urge you to please not visit Downieville or other Lost Sierra mountain communities until government officials say it is safe to do so.”

SBTS will continue their work on trails and we look forward to supporting them in future gatherings for trail work and events. We are all in this together.
