The Lure of ‘Yak Fishingโ€”Paddle-powered angling offers a boatload of advantages, thrills.

I've been in the ocean all my life, surfing since I was 12 and fishing seriously since age 25. Often I would sit on my board between sets and look longingly at the outside edge of the kelp beds, wishing I had a rod with me to catch some tasty rockfish for dinner that night. Fishing off my longboard was never very comfortable, so I was completely stoked when my wife bought me our first sit-on-top kayak. I immediately took it out for a full bag of rockfish, and have diligently pursued this exciting sport ever since.

Endless Summer The Evolution of Surf Films

The magic of a good surf film is such that it can turn a landlocked youth into a surf dreamer without ever having ridden a wave. Whether lured by the fluid purity of a rider slicing ahead of the curl, the easy going appeal of life in board shorts and flip-flops, or the mahalo appeal of the surf lifestyle, surfing offers a wealth of possibilities that appeal to viewers and filmmakers alike.

Destination: Chicoโ€”A Bike-Friendly, Park-Rich Sporting Oasis in the Sacramento Valley

Many people live for years in California without ever visiting Chico. Surrounded on three sides by farmland and set against the Sierra foothills 90 miles north of Sacramento, Chico sits safely off major thoroughfares. Unless Chico is your destination, or youโ€™re headed up Highway 32 to Lake Almanor or Lassen National Park, thereโ€™s little reason one would need to go there.

LEGENDS

Fifty years ago, the world was a harsher, more primitive placeโ€”at least in terms of adventure sports. Think for a moment about a little route on El Capitan in Yosemite called The Nose. Its slick granite face was difficult for a team of climbers to ascend after weeks of dangerous toil, let alone all-free and in a day. Meanwhile, bicycles of the time didnโ€™t boast suspension forks or disc brakes and surfers couldnโ€™t stay in Northern California waters for longer than a half hour without turning blue. Skiing was still a ballet-like sport best done in stretchy woolens and leather boots, and no one even considered running a marathon, swimming 2.4 miles, and biking 112 miles consecutively while wearing a Speedo.

Step by Step Around Big Blue

The Tahoe Rim Trail: Itโ€™s 165 miles of primo single-track circling Lake Tahoe via two mountain ranges, three wilderness areas and two states. Mile after mile of jaw dropping vistas of Lake Tahoe, quiet strolls through deep forest, and glacier carved lakes at the base of high granite peaks. In July, youโ€™ll find spectacular wildflower gardens at Meiss Meadows; August is time for a refreshing swim in Dickโ€™s Lake; and in the fall, yellow aspen leaves light up Snow Valley.

Wild & Scenic Bachelor Party

Greg Speicher watches as C-1 paddler Norwood Scott runs a rapid in Devilโ€™s Canyon. We are dragging Tecate. There is so much beer in the raft โ€“ as well as a cooler of frozen red meat and bacon โ€“ on our first day on the Middle Fork of the Feather River that the back end keeps hanging up on shallow rapid entrances.
