Destination: Chicoโ€”A Bike-Friendly, Park-Rich Sporting Oasis in the Sacramento Valley

Many people live for years in California without ever visiting Chico. Surrounded on three sides by farmland and set against the Sierra foothills 90 miles north of Sacramento, Chico sits safely off major thoroughfares. Unless Chico is your destination, or youโ€™re headed up Highway 32 to Lake Almanor or Lassen National Park, thereโ€™s little reason one would need to go there.

Doug Robinson and the Extreme Bohemians

In March of 1970 Doug Robinson skied the entire John Muir Trail from Whitney Portal to Yosemite. His partner for this adventure was Carl “Peanut” McCoy, former downhill ski racer and son of the Mammoth Mountain McCoys, builders of the well-known ski resort. Spending weeks unsupported in the winter wilderness was a radical undertaking, but for Doug the journey was a natural progression. Increasingly Doug was pursuing a lifestyle of full time, hardcore adventure in the Sierra.

LEGENDS

Fifty years ago, the world was a harsher, more primitive placeโ€”at least in terms of adventure sports. Think for a moment about a little route on El Capitan in Yosemite called The Nose. Its slick granite face was difficult for a team of climbers to ascend after weeks of dangerous toil, let alone all-free and in a day. Meanwhile, bicycles of the time didnโ€™t boast suspension forks or disc brakes and surfers couldnโ€™t stay in Northern California waters for longer than a half hour without turning blue. Skiing was still a ballet-like sport best done in stretchy woolens and leather boots, and no one even considered running a marathon, swimming 2.4 miles, and biking 112 miles consecutively while wearing a Speedo.

Cruisers, Clunkers and the Origins of the Off-Road Bike

Charlie Kelly hauling denim down Repackโ€™s Camera Corner, late 1976, on his 50-pound modified Schwinn Excelsior. Notice the safety gear โ€“ knee pads, elbow pads, leather gloves and boots โ€“ sans helmet. A pickup truck parade that includes a pink 1953 Chevy leaves the last outpost of civilization โ€“ the leafy, hippie oasis that is Fairfax โ€“ heading up into the hills, with 50-pound bicycles and two chronometers โ€ฆ To Repack. The Repack trail drops 1,300 feet in 2.1 miles down the east side of Pine Mountain. At the top is an open ridge with views of Mt. Tamalpais, Marin, the San Francisco Bay, and the blue sky beyond. Fred Wolf and Charlie Kelly started the race down Repack, on Oct. 21, 1976, to be precise.

BEER THIRTY!

The link between sports and beer is well established. But in the adventure sports community, weโ€™re not talking about sitting on oneโ€™s kiester, sipping over-priced beer from a plastic cup while watching overpaid professionals have all the fun. For the most part, our beers are earned. For us, beer is the reward at the end of a long backcountry journey, a relaxing capper at the end of a high-intensity effort, the liquid gold at the end of a sweat fest. Not only does it help replace lost calories and soothe from the bloodstream out, it provides a prism of perspective to share and relive our adventures with friends.
