Teleโ€™s Youth Movement

Telemark skiing is an addictive and challenging sport that most snow junkies discover only after years of alpine skiing and snowboarding. It might be the lure of the backcountry, the comfort of lighter weight gear, or the soulful, expressive style of the turn. Regardless, itโ€™s largely an avocation of adults, twenty-somethings and up, often seasoned skiers and boarders that have plateaued and are looking for a fresh challenge.

24 Hours of Enlightenment

Mountain bike racers seem to fall into two categories: riders and racers. Riders proclaim that racing takes away from the very idea of mountain biking, shedding the fast paced, citified lifestyle in exchange for some winding single track with expansive views. Racers tend to approach riding as more of a challenge, and faster is always better. Ultimately, both pursuits will enrich your riding experience tremendously. Even if you lean more toward riding than racing, experience in one will always make you better at the other. Nowhere is that more apparent than during an endurance event like 24 hour racing.

Pumpinโ€™: An Introduction to the World of Pump Tracks

Unless youโ€™ve been hanging out by the bike shop water cooler, you might not have heard of the latest craze to hit the mountain bike world โ€“ the pump track. A pump track is a small, looping trail system that you can ride continuously without pedaling. Your speed along the pump track is dependent on your ability to gain momentum by โ€œpumpingโ€ the tight terrain transitions of the track.

Pre-hab, not Re-hab!

The price of this seasonal drift? Each winter, after my first days of lunging and plunging on my tele skis, I am hobbled. A hundred-year flood of lactic acid saturates the pulverized tissue of my thighs and glutes. The first month of the season is spent recovering, trying to ski myself into shape, while sidestepping the serious injuries Iโ€™m courting because of my lack of due diligence.

Train for Snow

Whatโ€™s the deal with winter? If you are anything like me, winter is generally a bad time for fitness and outdoor sports. Oh sure, I try every year to resist the lure of massive holiday overeating, but inevitably I am ten pounds heavier and in lousy shape come spring. Then I spend spring and summer getting back into shape and the whole cycle starts againโ€”fit and motivated in the summer, lazy, fat and uninspired in the winter. Gaining fitness in the summer; gaining weight in the winter. You get the picture.

Teens Veer Off Roadโ€ฆ Parents Applaud!โ€”NorCal high school mountain bike league surging in popularity

The revolution may not be televised โ€ฆ yet โ€ฆ but itโ€™s already in its sixth season and itโ€™s spreading. Go to any bike shop in the Bay Area that carries Fisher or Trek and youโ€™ll see evidence of it on their counters and stuck to their bulletin boards: a neat stack of pamphlets that instruct any innocent passerby to โ€œJoin the High School Mountain Biking Revolution!โ€ The picture on the cover is a close up on three young riders garbed in rebel redโ€”legs pumping, jaw muscles flexing. Itโ€™s the NorCal High School Mountain Bike Racing League, and they may be coming to your town โ€ฆ if theyโ€™re not there all ready.

Loving Half Dome to Death

When it came time to design its state quarter for the U.S. Mint, California had a wealth of iconic images from which to choose: larger-than-life personalities, grand structures (the Golden Gate Bridge would have been an obvious choice), and countless natural wonders. In the end, a state not known for dwelling on the past did just that, reaching deep into history to create an illustration with a strong conservation theme depicting the ancient California condor, the great naturalist John Muir, and Yosemite's 87 million year old Half Dome.
