It began with a dream in legendary mountain bike racer Mark Weir’s backyard in Marin County – an area that, despite being “the birthplace of mountain biking,” is not known to be mountain bike friendly.
To help engage and create our next generation of park visitors, supporters and advocates, the National Parks Foundation is kicking off the Every Kid in a Park initiative. The immediate goal is to provide an opportunity for each and every 4th grade student across the country to experience their public lands and waters in person throughout the 2015-2016 school year.
She was a 60 year old woman who had driven about an hour to get to our shop Girly Ride, and had brought along her older comfort bike to ride on the trail. She told me this was to be her very first mountain bike ride ever.
There’s something about returning to a familiar place after a long time away that calms the mind and relaxes the body. If you’re fortunate enough to call one of these small beautiful towns your hometown, you should consider yourself lucky, for not many people can make that claim.

Happy International Women's Day! We are so thankful for the inspirational women we have been able to cover over the years.
Our current issue features an article on @shawn_cheshire, an EMT and Army veteran who got knocked down while attending to a combative patient. Over the next two years, the resulting brain injury left her completely blind.
She tried to kill herself twice in those first dark years. Now she's trying to climb Everest and Lhotse back to back.

For our current issue’s Earn Your Beer article, columnist James Murren takes us on a no-agenda, no-plan snow bike ride outside of Yosemite’s south gate in Sierra National Forest.
After “earning his beer” fat biking through a winter wonderland, James enjoyed a can of Citra Dreampint by @newglorybrewery, a hazy offering, followed up with New Glory’s Gummy Worms, a “chewy pale ale.” 🍺

“From the very beginning, ASJ was intended to be a space where people could be authentic about their adventures. We only sought the truth in our pages. Twenty years later we are still seeking the truth about why we test ourselves in magical landscapes. Not to seek danger for danger’s sake, but because we know that without challenge and a measured dose of risk we can’t evolve and progress as human beings.” 🗻

2022 was a rough year for our long-time contributor @chrisvanleuven. On the heels of a bike crash injury, his hair started falling out in clumps due to an undiagnosed health condition. Then the unthinkable happened, when his house and most of his belongings burned down in Mariposa County’s Oak Fire.
In an article in our latest issue, Chris recounts how he was able to “fill his cup” with climbing, biking and writing through those tough times — and found himself happy to be “alive and thriving” in the Sierra foothills. 🧗 🚵 💻 💖

Roy Tuscany suffered a spinal injury in 2006. After his recovery he founded @hi5sfoundation, a non-profit that has helped hundreds of injured athletes and veterans from across the country.
“The massive thing I’ve recognized through this work is that sports are a byproduct of community,” Tuscany explains. “We know that if we can get people back to sport, we can use sport as a vehicle to get them back to community and social interaction. We use sport as a way to integrate people back into … people.”
