The first time I found myself hanging forty feet above the floor in a climbing gym, I never imagined that such an unlikely position would become a regular part of my life. Or that it would lead to a personal transformation. I was 58, and life had battered me to the point where I was more than ready for a big change. The kid at the other end of the rope, my son Alex Honnold, would soon go on to become a household name. That day, he handed me a lifeline.
The Lake Tahoe Triathlon is a favorite of many triathletes. The venue, setting and course offer a truly beautiful and challenging experience. Choose from the Sprint, Olympic, Half Ironman, Aquabike or Duathlon distances.
A few years ago, when Frost was 79 years old, he engaged multi-award winning bicycle builder Rob English to create a lightweight road bike to help him climb Old Priest grade. Frost had shared his desire with fellow climbing legend Conrad Anker, whose family has owned the land since the 1800s and runs the Priest Station Cafe at the top of the spectacular grade. Unfortunately, Frost passed before fulfilling this dream.

Happy International Women's Day! We are so thankful for the inspirational women we have been able to cover over the years.
Our current issue features an article on @shawn_cheshire, an EMT and Army veteran who got knocked down while attending to a combative patient. Over the next two years, the resulting brain injury left her completely blind.
She tried to kill herself twice in those first dark years. Now she's trying to climb Everest and Lhotse back to back.

For our current issue’s Earn Your Beer article, columnist James Murren takes us on a no-agenda, no-plan snow bike ride outside of Yosemite’s south gate in Sierra National Forest.
After “earning his beer” fat biking through a winter wonderland, James enjoyed a can of Citra Dreampint by @newglorybrewery, a hazy offering, followed up with New Glory’s Gummy Worms, a “chewy pale ale.” 🍺

“From the very beginning, ASJ was intended to be a space where people could be authentic about their adventures. We only sought the truth in our pages. Twenty years later we are still seeking the truth about why we test ourselves in magical landscapes. Not to seek danger for danger’s sake, but because we know that without challenge and a measured dose of risk we can’t evolve and progress as human beings.” 🗻

2022 was a rough year for our long-time contributor @chrisvanleuven. On the heels of a bike crash injury, his hair started falling out in clumps due to an undiagnosed health condition. Then the unthinkable happened, when his house and most of his belongings burned down in Mariposa County’s Oak Fire.
In an article in our latest issue, Chris recounts how he was able to “fill his cup” with climbing, biking and writing through those tough times — and found himself happy to be “alive and thriving” in the Sierra foothills. 🧗 🚵 💻 💖

Roy Tuscany suffered a spinal injury in 2006. After his recovery he founded @hi5sfoundation, a non-profit that has helped hundreds of injured athletes and veterans from across the country.
“The massive thing I’ve recognized through this work is that sports are a byproduct of community,” Tuscany explains. “We know that if we can get people back to sport, we can use sport as a vehicle to get them back to community and social interaction. We use sport as a way to integrate people back into … people.”
