The Challenge Fondo 2016 in Durham!
September 10, Durham

The Challenge Fondo is an inclusive cycling event designed for cyclists of all abilities. It offers a unique and supportive environment, with categories for adaptive athletes, including those with upper or lower limb disabilities, vision or hearing impairments, handcyclists, recumbents, and tandems (with either blind or sighted stokers). Additionally, it includes the usual age-group categories for fully-able cyclists, ensuring that everyone can find a suitable challenge.

Participants can choose from various timed routes: hilly 100-, 65-, and 50-mile courses, as well as a flat and fast 30-mile course. For those seeking a more leisurely ride, there’s a flat 20-mile fun-ride, which is not timed. Every rider, regardless of the route they choose, receives an event t-shirt, access to well-stocked rest stops, on-road support, a finisher souvenir, and a post-ride meal and raffle. Timed riders have the opportunity to compete for awards, prizes, and podium positions, adding an element of excitement and competition to the event.

The event’s co-host, Ability First Sports, will have handcycles available on-site for disabled athletes who wish to try one. Adaptive athletes can register separately for the 20-mile fun ride, a 5-mile test-ride, or a parking lot demo, providing a fantastic opportunity to experience handcycling in a supportive and encouraging environment.

By participating in the Challenge Fondo, cyclists are not only taking on a personal challenge but also contributing to a greater cause. The entry fees support efforts to make local roads safer for all cyclists and encourage people of all ages and abilities to incorporate bicycling into their healthy lifestyle choices. This event highlights the importance of inclusivity in sports and promotes a community spirit that welcomes everyone.

Whether you are a seasoned cyclist looking for a competitive challenge or a beginner seeking a fun and supportive ride, the Challenge Fondo offers something for everyone. Join us for a great day on the bike, knowing that your participation helps promote safer roads and a healthier lifestyle for all.
