Thirty Eight Years and Still Going Strong!

The Rotary Club of Santa Cruz Sunrise is ecstatic to announce that our full Firecracker race is back for 2023. That means all three courses will be available – 10K, 5K, and a Kid’s 1K Fun Run will be hosted at Harvey West Park.

Its all here and waiting for just for you! The race is always held on July 4th in the morning! What a great way to kick off a holiday celebration of our nation’s Independence Day.

Runners on the 10K will be treated the the challenging “Thrill of the Hill” in Pogonip Park before topping out on the Spring Trail that winds through the beautiful meadow by UCSC before dropping down into the neighborhoods before returning to Harvey West Park.

5K Runners will face a flat and fast course contained completely in the Harvey West Business Park Area. The 5K course is Stroller, ADA and Wheelchair accessible.

Everyone ends up in beautiful Harvey West Park for great music, post-race burritos and awards. You don’t want to miss this!

Refer a Runner! When you register you will have an option to refer 5 people – friends or family. If those people all register for the race will get an automatic refund on your registration. Total referrals for the 5K and 10K is a $10 refund and for the 1K it is a $5 refund. So what are you waiting for – Pay it Forward and claim your refunds.

🧗 Also in this issue, Doug Robinson, known as the “Father of Clean Climbing,” returns with part two of his clean climbing manifesto. His revolutionary ideas, first introduced in the 1972 Chouinard catalog, challenge climbers to reflect on their impact on nature.

📜Building on this theme of responsible climbing, we also highlight the Yosemite Climbing Associations Climber’s Credo, a grassroots agreement developed to address the proposed nationwide fixed anchor prohibition in Wilderness areas. This initiative promotes ethical climbing practices and aims to influence future regulations to preserve access.

🌲 Other stories include the Inyo Mountain Wilderness, solo bikepacking in the Lost Sierra, the indigenous-led effort to restore and paddle the Klamath River, climbing Mexico’s volcanoes, and the return of great white sharks along California’s coast.
