The 2026 statewide general trout season opens Saturday, April 25, bringing anglers back to lakes, rivers, and streams across California.

Each year, the trout season opener draws thousands of people to well-known fishing destinations such as Burney, Bishop, Mammoth Lakes, and many other mountain communities across the state.

The season officially begins one hour before sunrise, giving early risers the chance to cast their lines during the quiet pre-dawn hours when trout are often most active. Families, friends, and anglers—both seasoned and new—are encouraged to take part in this time-honored tradition that signals the arrival of spring and the return of outdoor recreation.

“Opening day is more than just the start of trout season—it’s a tradition that brings communities together,” said Nick Buckmaster, CDFW Senior Environmental Scientist. “We’re excited to welcome anglers of all ages to enjoy the outdoors responsibly and make lasting memories on the water.”

Most lakes, rivers, and streams have a daily limit of five trout and a 10-trout possession limit, though regulations vary by location. Anglers should check specific area rules, including season dates, gear restrictions, and size limits, in the 2026 California Freshwater Sport Fishing Regulations, available online. All anglers 16 and older must carry a valid California fishing license.

CDFW also offers tools to help anglers plan their trips, including the California Inland Recreational Angler Survey (CIRAS) and an online Fishing Guide, which provide information on trout stocking, locations, and conditions.

For those looking to go deeper, the Heritage and Wild Trout Program offers maps and resources on California’s native trout, along with the Heritage Trout Challenge, which encourages anglers to catch six different native trout species in their historic waters.

CDFW’s Recruit, Retain, Reactivate (R3) initiative also provides videos, tips, and resources for both beginners and experienced anglers.

Important Regional Exceptions

While April 25 marks the statewide opener, some waters follow different schedules:

  • South Fork American River (El Dorado County): Opens for trout harvest May 23; catch-and-release only (no bait or barbed hooks) before then
  • American River and tributaries: Same May 23 opener for trout harvest; artificial gear and catch-and-release prior
  • Lake Tahoe tributaries: Open to catch-and-release May 23; artificial lures and barbless hooks required
