Inaugural Sagan Fondo events raise funds for non-profits

World road racing champion Peter Sagan is on a mission to raise awareness and money for at-risk youth through his inaugural gran fondo events โ€” the Sagan Fondo dirt edition (May 3-5, Truckee) and Sagan Fondo road edition (November 1-3, location TBD).

You can help by attending the fundraising gala which takes place the weekend of each event, or by starting your own fundraising campaign. Fundraising efforts will benefit the following non-profit at-risk youth organizations: King Ridge Foundation, Specialized Foundation and Adventure Risk Challenge.

Sagan says, “My Fondo is not just a bike race. Itโ€™s an opportunity to support kids through local charities. I’m excited to work with the following organizations because we need to start with the little ones first. Only with a good foundation can they achieve many of their own monuments.”

King Ridge Foundation

The King Ridge Foundationโ€™s mission is to give at-risk youth the chance they deserve to succeed in life. They support smaller organizations throughout the US who focus on unique youth needs in their community.

To date, King Ridge Foundation has raised more than $3,000,000 for at-risk youth and recently led a campaign to restore the community it lives in through the Sonoma Pride fundraiser. In November of 2017, Peter Sagan joined #RideForSonomaPride which contributed more than $40,000 to that end.

Adventure Risk Challenge

Adventure Risk Challenge (ARC) is the official non-profit partner of Sagan Fondo Truckee Dirt Edition.

ARC is a youth development nonprofit that integrates academic and outdoor programming for low-income and at-risk high school youth in the Central Valley and the Sierra Nevada, bolstering their skills in literacy, leadership, and life. ARC exposes these deserving youth to outdoor adventure experiences such as backpacking, biking, kayaking and rock climbing, and incorporates relevant academic instruction and leadership development into the outdoor activities. Following these transformational experiences ARC supports each individual participant through mentoring, college access support, and employment opportunities.

ARC Executive Director Sarah Ottley says “Adventure Risk Challenge is extremely honored to be partnering with a mission-driven cycling event this spring. As a result of Bike Monkey’s support and our involvement in the Peter Sagan Fondo, ARC will be able to purchase much-needed outdoor gear for summer courses, offer more weekend adventure retreats during the coming academic year, and mentor additional at-risk youth into college. Dozens more youth will be transformed through ARC programs this year as a result of of this partnership, and it’s difficult to find the words to express our gratitude! On behalf of all our youth participants, THANK YOU!”

Specialized Foundation

The Specialized Foundation uses cycling as a tool for children to achieve academic, health, and social success.

Through investments in primary scientific medical research and school-based cycling programs, our mission is to increase accessibility to cycling to aid youth in personal development and education.

Attend the gala

Raise a glass in support of the King Ridge Foundation’s mission to serve at-risk youth; in this case Truckee’s own Adventure Risk Challenge and the Specialized Foundation.

The gala will be held Friday May 3 at the Resort at Squaw Creek and kicks off with pre-event mixer and silent auction featuring items from race experiences to getaways near and far. Attendees will enjoy a lavish meal paired with hand-picked wines from Limerick Laneโ€™s own collection of Russian River Valley wines. (Yes, Saganโ€™s pouring, so drink up.)

A post-dinner live auction tops off this evening that, through Adventure Risk Challenge, will bring children closer to the healing and supportive power of the great outdoors.

Tickets are $295 per person; table of ten for the price of nine.

About Sagan Fondo

The May 3-5 Sagan Fondo is a competitive gravel/dirt adventure designed to showcase one of Saganโ€™s favorite places in California โ€” the high alpine areas of the Sierra near Lake Tahoe. Short and Long course routes are available as well as a non-timed version for the casual rider. CX/gravel bikes with 35cm or wider tires and mountain bikes are recommended. Spots are limited to the first 1,500 registrants.

โ€œI love California! My time in the Tour of California is some of the best of my racing season,โ€ says Sagan. โ€œNot only does California provide some of the best roads and most beautiful scenery in the world, the warmth and friendliness of its people are second to none. Thatโ€™s why, together with Bike Monkey, I wanted to host an on-bike party in one of my favorite parts of the world.โ€
