Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area (RRCNCA) – a renowned destination near Las Vegas cherished by outdoor enthusiasts worldwide – is currently facing a significant threat from a proposed housing development project. This project includes the construction of 5,000 homes on land that borders the RRCNCA. Clark County Commissioners are evaluating a request to rezone this rural land, a move that could devastate Red Rock’s pristine landscape. If approved, this development would bring increased pollution and traffic, disrupting the natural beauty and tranquility of the area. Such a transformation would likely anger the two million annual visitors who flock to RRCNCA for its climbing, hiking, biking, and camping opportunities.

Save Red Rock (SRR) is a grassroots organization dedicated to preserving the rural, recreational, and scenic essence of Red Rock Canyon. With a history of successful advocacy, SRR is actively mobilizing support from outdoor enthusiasts and opponents of the proposed 2,010-acre high-density development. The decision on the fate of Red Rock Canyon is set to be made by the Clark County Commissioners on December 7, 2016.

Heather Fisher, president of SRR, founded the organization in 2005 in memory of her friend Don Albietz, who was tragically killed by a construction truck while cycling along the Red Rock Scenic Byway. “Our coalition is fighting high-density rezoning in the area because it would decrease safety for outdoor enthusiasts and change the rural character of Red Rock Canyon forever,” Fisher explains.

The potential consequences of this development are profound. Red Rock Canyon is not just a local treasure but a global one, attracting visitors who seek its unspoiled natural environment. High-density development would mar this landscape, bringing urban issues such as pollution and increased traffic congestion. This change would undermine the very qualities that make Red Rock Canyon a unique and treasured destination.

SRR’s efforts have garnered substantial support, with more than 22,000 people signing their petition to protect the area from high-density development. This overwhelming response underscores the widespread opposition to the proposed project and the community’s dedication to preserving Red Rock Canyon’s natural beauty.

To support the cause and help safeguard Red Rock Canyon from this looming threat, individuals are encouraged to sign the petition and raise their voices against the rezoning proposal. By doing so, they can contribute to the ongoing effort to maintain the integrity and splendor of this beloved conservation area for future generations.
