Itβs 2018 and women have finally gotten their foot in the door of big wave surf contests. Gaining tenure in that arena, however, is a work in progress. The world has seen women compete at Jaws and Nelscott Reef, but we are still waiting to see them compete at the most notorious big wave location in California ... Mavericks.

On a bright day in mid-November, a dozen big wave surfers made history and set a new precedent for all who will come behind them. These 12 intrepid women stood up to dangerously windy conditions at the Peβahi Womenβs Challenge in Maui and became the first women to compete in their own big wave event alongside their male counterparts.
