The California Enduro Series kicked off its 2014 season just outside Reno on Saturday June 7 with the sold-out Battle Born Enduro presented by the Silver Legacy Resort Casino. The Poedunks, a non-profit trail stewardship organization, constructed new trails on Peavine Mountain for the race which raised funds for the local trail network.
275 racers took on a classic high desert course featuring exposed, scrubby terrain and loose drifty dirt. After gathering at Rancho San Rafael Regional Park for an early morning riders meeting, racers of all categories tackled the long pedal to the start of stage 1. Junior and Sport racers took on a 22.5 mile course that included four special stages and 3800’ of climbing. A rocky, technical fifth stage was added to Expert and Pro categories, equating to 25.5 miles and 4500′ of climbing. Racing under full sun in mid-90’s heat, riders rehydrated and refueled at each stage, and motivated one another with the camaraderie inherent in enduro racing.
Upon completing all stages, riders were treated to lunch and a beer, and cooled off in the shade trading race stories as they waited for results to be posted. Spot-on chip timing provided by Bike Monkey allowed for a prompt podium ceremony. Over $4,000 in cash and prizes were distributed to category winners, with pro purses to the five fastest men and women. Awards went three deep in all other categories.
