9th annual ride hosts 800 riders and benefits Reno-Sparks youth organizations

The 9th annual Edible Pedal 100 was held with nearly 800 riders on September 15. The setting was a beautiful day starting and ending at historical Bowerโ€™s Mansion, located in Washoe Valley in northern Nevada.

The event is a ride rather than a race, so the experience and food offerings can be enjoyed at oneโ€™s own pace. Riders had an option to enjoy various distances ranging from an easy ten miles to the challenging 100-miler. There were numerous rest stops along the way to provide rider with energizing refreshments and colorful fall scenery.

Edible Pedal 100 is a fundraiser for the Reno Sunrise Rotary club and the proceeds go to several local organizations serving a range of youth from at-risk elementary-aged students to ROTC cadets at the university level. The event also benefits the Tahoe Pyramid Bikeway Project, Washoe Amateur Radio Service, Reno Bike Project, and Lake Tahoe Backcountry Bike Patrol.

Edible Pedal 100 also seeks to promote healthy lifestyle choices for kids and adults by producing an annual event that focuses on fitness and eating right. Organizers strive to give everyone a reason to ride a bike, as doing so is a great way to model a lifetime fitness activity for family, friends, employees and colleagues. Riding a bike and teaching kids to grow food encourages responsible eating and is a real life lesson in โ€œhard work pays offโ€ or โ€œdelayed rewards.”

Another objective of the event is to showcase northern Nevada as a destination cycling venue. The region boasts incredible mountain biking trails and road bike routes. A thriving century bike ride shows tourists and prospective employers that the community embraces a healthy lifestyle. In the short and long run, ride organizers think this is critical to their community.
