Granlibakken Tahoe offers endless activities and cozy accommodations

For active families that love exploring, Granlibakken Tahoe’s 74-acre privately-owned resort provides an adventurous alpine experience for all ages. Featuring an onsite sled and ski hill, outdoor par course, miles of forest trails, and water sports at nearby Lake Tahoe, plus convenient lodging options and location, the resort is an ideal spot for families to gather and connect.

Granlibakken, Norwegian for “hill sheltered by trees”, transformed from a popular winter recreation area to a full-fledged resort when Norwegian ski jumper Kjell “Rusty” Rustad leased the land in 1940. He started with a log ski hut built out of the trees that were cleared for the ski hill, a house to live in and a duplex that slept six on each side for visitors.

Today, Granlibakken has expanded to offer a wide variety of lodging options, from cozy single rooms, studios and suites, to spacious townhomes. Amenities include five tennis courts, outdoor heated pools and a large hot tub, a yoga and meditation space, fitness center, sauna, and a day spa for massages and facials.

Dining selections include a daily full breakfast buffet and an onsite gastro pub restaurant, both serving options for vegetarians and gluten-free. Meals are prepared in the resort’s commercial kitchen with a focus on providing fresh and delicious meals, including a kids’ menu, that help keep guests fueled for the day.

With all those options onsite and an ambiance that is classic Tahoe, it’s what lies just outside the resort’s property that is often the biggest draw.

There’s the famous Tahoe Rim Trail, accessible right off the Granlibakken property for hiking and mountain biking. And then there is Lake Tahoe itself, 1.5 miles from Granlibakken and a stunning, crystal-clear body of water for kayaking, paddle boarding, and swimming in the warmer months. Summer rafting on the Truckee River is another nearby attraction.

In winter, the resort’s ski and sled hills are perfect for beginners and families. Generations of skiers and snowboarders, locals and visitors alike, have earned their chops at Granlibakken’s historic slope. Lessons are available onsite, and parents can watch from the ski hut and deck while enjoying a warm beverage.

Off the hill and on the resort’s trails (flat-groomed, without stride-skiing tracks) you’ll find snowshoers, as well as advanced cross-country skiers looking for sloping hills and access to Tahoe’s backcountry (when weather permits). For experienced skiers and snowboarders, Lake Tahoe’s famed ski areas surround Granlibakken, which remains a popular lodging option for families.
