Santa Cruz Firecracker Race Celebrates 40 Years

A Fourth of July Tradition of Running, Redwoods, and Community

What’s better than fireworks on the 4th of July? Running beneath redwoods, powering up scenic hills, and finishing with a breakfast burrito at the iconic Santa Cruz Firecracker Race.

This Independence Day marks the 40th Annual Firecracker 10K, 5K, and 1K—a beloved Santa Cruz tradition hosted at Harvey West Park. The Firecracker Race is a festive celebration of community spirit, athletic challenge, and summertime fun.

The Story Behind the Spark

Born in 1985 from a city-led effort to create a healthier Independence Day, the first Firecracker Race wound through Santa Cruz streets and up the now-famous “Hill” into the lush Pogonip trails.

A few hiccups (including runners being misdirected!) only added to the charm and forged the race’s legacy: fun first, competition second.

Today, thanks to the Santa Cruz Sunrise Rotary Club, the Firecracker continues to grow. Proceeds benefit local youth through the Santa Cruz Sunrise Rotary Foundation and the For Kids Foundation Monterey Bay.

Which Race Will You Conquer?

  • 10K – Climb “The Hill” and earn your bragging rights with a challenging and scenic loop through Pogonip.

  • 5K – A fast, flat course through the Harvey West Park neighborhood, perfect for all levels.

  • Kid’s 1K – A short and fun run for the little ones inside the park.

Local runner Penni Bengtson sums it up:

“Don’t let the hill scare you—every runner should experience it once. Whether you walk, jog, or sprint, the beauty at the top is unforgettable.”

Race Perks You’ll Love

  • Custom Firecracker Race T-shirt

  • Post-run breakfast burrito

  • Festive community atmosphere
