Even though he’s not a writer, mountain bike racing legend Mark Weir has a way with words. He’s able to summarize life experiences succinctly while being entertaining, making you simultaneously think while laughing.
What started in 2007 as a dream to construct a 9-mile multi-use singletrack trail with 3,000 vertical feet of elevation came to its full realization on January 16, 2018, when the final 1.7 miles of singletrack on Mills Peak Trail in Graeagle, CA was completed.
The Lost Sierra region that includes the notorious Downieville Downhill is a model for true shared multi-use recreation, thanks in part to a strong partnership between the Sierra Buttes Trail Stewardship (SBTS), Sierra County Land Trust, the Tahoe National Forest – Yuba Ranger District and the Pacific Crest Trail Association (PCTA).
When a destination becomes a part of culture and folklore, everybody wants to go there. That’s the beauty of Downieville. It’s hidden away enough that only the devoted and deranged find their way to this majestic gem in the Lost Sierra.
The Downieville Classic delivers a weekend of racing and partying in the Lost Sierra where riders have to pick one tool for two disciplines: a 29-mile cross country race or a 15-mile downhill with 5,000 vertical drop.
Ride, wine and dine in the Lost Sierra with pro mountain biker Teal Stetson-Lee on October 21-22, 2016. This sweet women’s ride weekend is a stay-and-cycle package hosted by Nakoma Resort and will hit the trails that make up the Downieville Downhill.
The Downieville Classic is a mountain bike race unlike any other event on the planet. It combines rugged mountain singletrack, serious racing, and absolute anarchy in four wild days in the Lost Sierra.
“Just try it.” I found myself saying those three words a lot to my friends over the past few months when they laid eyes on the none-more-black Specialized Turbo Levo, a curious machine I call a motorized off-road bicycle (MORB).
A long sentence about this winter offers some perspective about this season in the mountains
❄️ This winter has left me nearly speechless but not quite because how on God’s green earth turned snow white can anyone be quiet while looking out on a sunny Bishop day while pondering how 40-plus feet of snow swamped Mammoth and swallowed houses and closed Yosemite National Park while by some miracle of heavy equipment and muscle power a huge ski hill with dozens of lifts keeps chugging away and hauling paying customers and hard-core locals up the slopes without losing any of them and also giving them rooms at the inn and food just like their business counterparts in Mammoth Lakes who somehow keep showing up and keep serving up burgers and coffee and pizza and tacos while also keeping asphalt open to hotels and motels and B&Bs

Happy International Women's Day! We are so thankful for the inspirational women we have been able to cover over the years.
Our current issue features an article on @shawn_cheshire, an EMT and Army veteran who got knocked down while attending to a combative patient. Over the next two years, the resulting brain injury left her completely blind.
She tried to kill herself twice in those first dark years. Now she's trying to climb Everest and Lhotse back to back.

For our current issue’s Earn Your Beer article, columnist James Murren takes us on a no-agenda, no-plan snow bike ride outside of Yosemite’s south gate in Sierra National Forest.
After “earning his beer” fat biking through a winter wonderland, James enjoyed a can of Citra Dreampint by @newglorybrewery, a hazy offering, followed up with New Glory’s Gummy Worms, a “chewy pale ale.” 🍺

“From the very beginning, ASJ was intended to be a space where people could be authentic about their adventures. We only sought the truth in our pages. Twenty years later we are still seeking the truth about why we test ourselves in magical landscapes. Not to seek danger for danger’s sake, but because we know that without challenge and a measured dose of risk we can’t evolve and progress as human beings.” 🗻
